The new report assesses the socioeconomic risk from “acute” hazards (one-off events like floods), as well as from “chronic” hazards (long-term shifts in climate parameters like temperature). WHRC scientists produced the report’s analyses of physical climate hazards.

The global economy relies on endless layers of systems that were built within the stable climate of the past. Spencer Glendon of says "the actual experience of the economy is contingent on the climate of the future.”

  3. "The notion that climate science had great forecasts & finance had terrible forecasts, yet no one in finance used climate science struck me as a peculiar state of affairs," WHRC's Spencer Glendon told . "I tried to figure out what I could do about it."

  4. Forests are important natural solutions that can buy additional time to eliminate use of fossil fuels, but cannot replace emissions reductions.

  5. Last fall, more than 11,000 scientists declared "clearly and unequivocally that planet Earth is facing a climate emergency.” What is needed is urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  6. WHRC contributed to groundbreaking report. If investors & business leaders don’t account for these risks, “that will be unforgivable,” WHRC's Spencer Glendon said. “Because everyone knew they were coming.” Read more in .

  8. New study finds possible link between Arctic warming & more frequent El Niños in the Central Pacific. WHRC's Jen Francis told that this suggests "the influence of Arctic sea-ice loss on large-scale wind systems reaches farther than thought."

  9. "The Arctic has lost half its sea-ice coverage and three-quarters of sea-ice volume in only 4 decades," WHRC's Dr. Jen Francis said. "It's impossible that a change of this magnitude in such a critical part of the Earth's climate system will have no impact on weather patterns..."

  10. Is severe winter weather sensitive to weather patterns? In a new study, WHRC's Dr. Jen Francis explores this scientific discourse. "This study helps pinpoint reasons for the ongoing debate," Francis said. Read more in .

  17. “What we find is that from a carbon standpoint, protected land and indigenous territories are doing a tremendous job in buffering against losses, particularly losses associated with deforestation,” WHRC's Wayne Walker told /.

  18. Greater international support for indigenous land rights and livelihoods is a cost-effective way to limit . “They cannot be expected to [protect] these globally important resources on their own,” WHRC's Dr. Wayne Walker told .

  19. Plants & the ocean continue to sequester more & more carbon, but how long this absorption will last is unknown. "The carbon system has been pretty robust so far, but that doesn't mean it will go on like that forever," WHRC's Richard Houghton told .
