Isn't the conflation something that dates back to the greeks? As I understand it (which isn't particularly detailed or likely to be accurate) for the greeks virtue really *was* about achieving excellence, of which what we'd see as moral goodness was only a relatively small part.

This is also my understanding, or at least that "arete" encompasses both moral goodness and skill. But it seems a bit surprising to me to see the same shared overlap of meaning in both English and Greek!
