My mission for 2020 is to contribute to South Africa's digital economy, by building tools and platforms for local creators to earn a viable income from their work. The first of these: . Follow, DM, and sign up for the beta at if you're interested.

  2. I also spotted two editor modes: A full-featured Designer, and a lightweight Editor mode that lets you do stuff Wordpress "Page Builder" style - seemingly aimed at non-technical clients who just want to make quick content updates to pages.

  3. Neatest thing I've seen in a while - doesn't just let you build sites, they have infrastructure for designers to build sites for clients, host on behalf of clients, and *collect payment from clients* all within the same system. I wonder if that's getting any traction.

Hello! I'm in the market for a new job, a change of direction! I have a wealth of experience in writing & ecommerce (worked for some big names) but ideally want a writing gig. DM me if you know of anything. My LinkedIn profile: Here's a picture of a cat.

  5. This is impressive. In the back of my mind I always had YouTube down as a $4bn, maybe $5bn business. $15bn is 🚀

  7. My vim skill level is best described as "I know how to quit the editor that git brings up when pulling and merging changes but I couldn't be bothered to figure out how to change it to Nano."

  8. Hello, my name is Wogan. I've been using git for ten years. Yesterday I committed a plaintext password into a repo. Lucky for me, I was able to change it right away, and none of that code reached production yet, but still 😅

  10. For which I really like the unconference approach - focus on topics, skills and processes that people actually need *right now* vs trying to do something catch-all that you only get partial value from. Also, I miss hosting these at my former dayjob. They were fun.

  11. It's been in the back of my mind for ages, and it's definitely something that I want to do in general (education and training), but I can't really stomach the idea of creating Yet Another Udemy Course. Much prefer the in-person community-based approach with online supplementals.

  12. So if I were to hypothetically run weekly training workshops in Somerset West, covering a participant-led mix of practical skills training (Laravel, PHP, Wordpress, mobile app dev, digital marketing basics) in 90-120 minute sessions, would that be worthwhile?

  13. Is "good" the sort of person you don't have to train, equip or enable? That can (they claim) "hit the ground running"? The people who's schedules you don't need to plan around because work is all they do? I'm still new at this and have limited data, but man, I have questions.

  14. Is "good" the anonymous guy at [redacted company] who's about to burn out after 6 months of 14+ hour days? The sort of people you can have a beer with on Fridays without having to deal with the awkward "I actually don't drink" conversation? Twitter, help me out here, I'm lost.

  15. "It's really hard to find good devs" is basically the dogmatic catchphrase in IT recruitment, and it's honestly got me wondering what the benchmark for "good" is.

  16. "It's really hard to find good devs." First interview I did was with a candidate that is perfectly capable, and a few accommodations later (remote-first, company hardware, flexible hours) I might have found my first hire. Hard for who? 🤔

  17. Going by this list of vacancies you'd swear they just closed a series A and are building their team for the first time.

  19. Ditto for - I just signed up to a Pro subscription because they were able to give me the 9 icons I was looking for, without me having to page through a bunch of other free sites + they're all high-quality SVGs I can edit. Turns out you really do get what you pay for.

  20. I still love messing with infrastructure and I code every day of my life, but I've gotta say - Less than $1/day for a site that looks like it was designed by a professional, except I get to do it during non-billable off-hours and never have to think about uptime?

  21. 2017 Wogan: "There's no way I'd pay more than $5/month to host a website, given that's what a DigitalOcean droplet + free Wordpress costs." 2020 Wogan: "Heck yes I'll pay $24/month for - I get designs that work without having to mess with infrastructure? I'm in!"
