Wow, January 2020 was the warmest on record and greater than 3°C above the 1981-2010 climate average in Europe. The average global temperature was also the highest on record. 🔥 More info ():

It's a worrisome feedback loop: As the planet warms, permafrost begins to thaw. And when it does, microbes consume organic matter, releasing CO2 and methane into the atmosphere, leading to more warming, more thawing, and more carbon emissions.

Excellent piece in Nature this week covering our recent paper on evaluating climate model performance. We found that 14 of 17 climate model projections published between 1970 and 2001 accurately projected future warming:

A reminder: These and other regional heat records are being broken with an average of "just" ~1°C in the climate system. With current pledges under the , we are globally heading towards +3°C of heating. Real is a matter of survival

I am heading to Goulburn this evening for another few days of firefighting. It will be my 4th multiday strike team this season. Today I got to the station and spoke to another firefighter. The media keeps saying 'exhausted firefighters'. That is just one word to describe us.

departures from 1981-2010 average, widespread warmth, especially in the eastern half of US. Gives an idea of how a 4-8 F degree warming in the future would "feel" like in winter

The German government has decided to phase-out of coal no sooner than 2038. On top of destroying villages for the expansion of miles, it wants to start running a NEW COAL PLANT IN 2020. This morning, activists are blocking it to show that these plans are unacceptable.

I've seen 15-year-olds burnout because of climate activism. This notion that we're doing it for attention or for FUN would be humourous if it wasn't so belittling. There's nothing I'd like more than to go back to just studying for my degree, but someone has to pull their weight

Controlling our desire for more, learning to live within realistic limits, is not only in our own interest. It’s also necessary if we are to overcome the challenges to life on Earth that our incessant quest for more generates—since the material resources of this planet are finite

For the first time ever, we have video of the place where Thwaites Glacier—which could, by itself, raise sea levels by 1.5 feet—rests on the seafloor and melts away. I wrote about climate science’s version of the black hole photo:
