I’m worried by the number of high quality free games releasing at the moment. What gives? Why’re they being released for free?

Happened way before that, after the major algorithm change April 17 my games went from lots of sales a week to zero sales over night. It’s been that way all year.

free games is a way to get followers/people interested in your work. In practice you "convert" them later with paid games. A risky system but can work well :)

It’s a long-term, hella risky tactic. I think if you’ve got a small, game-jam type game, then it’s worth it, but otherwise they could’ve made so much money. I dunno.

Not really, without a serious funding for a large broad spectrum marketing push, just releasing your game is akin to firing it into a black hole these days. We’re simply finding other was in light of lack of said funds for that marketing push.

I think releasing a game has always been firing into a black hole, though. Maybe I’m pessimistic! PR/ marketing should always be done.

Absolutely and I’ve always done so but I realistically don’t have the reach needed to get launch week figured of a year ago. So hence the trying of different ways. Is working so far.

there's not that much "PR" you can do nowadays - press sites ignore you (even top indies) so it's all about social or if you want to spend money (which you'll never recover). I think it hasn't been so bad in indie games since... the beginning

I don’t know about that, up until the algorithm change I was doing okay. Not rich, but enough to keep me being able to make games. I agree that press has had little impact when I’ve been covered.
