I think attributing them with something like Rank F -> Rank A+ -> Rank SSS would be less confusing so players don't have to remember ten different words (and they'll likely only care for the top 1 to 5).

yes probably makes more sense, since players might confuse Novice with Beginner, etc

Do you have a specific metaphor for it? Ex : military (recruit, soldier, general, etc..) or martial arts (belt colors or apprentice, master, grand-master). Otherwise, since you have so many levels, Rank numbers or letters like Jason suggests would make it.

Ultima(te), Forbidden, Godly, Mystical, Legendary,

Honestly, Skill Level 1, Level 2, etc. Generic - but also not confusing. Simple works - it's what they do in Mass Effect.
