That's what I hear when people are talking startups. "Have 6 months worth of salary in the bank, then you'll be fine." This doesn't work for every branch you want to start a company in.

back in 2010-2014 maybe 6 months was enough if you made a moderately successful game. Not true anymore with the indieapocalypse/flood

This is actually very sad. but making a good game takes a long of time, so a few years of full time work is a time that you do not make money.

What would you say about quitting a day job to go freelancing to be able to split time 50/50 between indie work & work that pays bills?

assuming you can get a sustained amount of freelance work to never worry, could work. But depends on the situation, if you have a family, kids, etc
