I'm all for different difficulty modes in #gamedesign these days. Even (or especially) for hardcore games. Here's why:

Designers aim for a particular level of challenge in their game. But that level will be at different points for different people.

A game that's challenging for me will be completely imbalanced both for someone better or less skilled in it. It'll be a bad game.

Difficulty levels let you pick your starting point and then proceed with the intended level of challenge.

Which, of course, is not to say that you shouldn't strive for better overall balance, learning curve, or tiered challenges.

Also worth mentioning: difficulty modes can't be just adjusted enemy stats. Different levels of play need help at different places.

Good example #2: Fallout 4's survival mode makes both you AND enemies easier to kill, then adds resource management and no saves.

Yeah, they work MUCH better than just making enemies take 2x time to kill. They expand the game instead of making it slower.

Yeah, I love when games make it more difficult by adding new variables instead of just boosting existing ones. New moves, options, variety.
