I usually use gimp - it can also open and save PSD files, and it's a very decent art program, though it depends on the version - the newest ones are shit. Right now I don't even have Photoshop - I use gimp for most things. And Mischief for paintings, but that's a pure art program

I tried GIMP but couldn't get into it, all shortcuts, etc. The two I've mentioned are the best solutions (for my needs) I've found

Krita is fantastic for painters but never use it for writing word balloons or designing typography posters

Clip Studio Paint is fantastic, and the learning curve is tiny if you are familiar with Photoshop. Opens all PSDs and can save out to them again too. I have my shortcuts set up the same in both, and sometimes I forget what program I'm in.
