And I think it worked really well in that game - you mixed and matched until around the mid-game when you started getting sets with bonuses for wearing all the pieces. Items could be upgraded to your current level - I think this system worked really well. In Valhalla, *all* the

...armour has a set bonus - so once you've got that first set at the beginning, you're disinclined from ever swapping a part out if you find something new until such time you've got an entire set to switch to. So far, I haven't changed armour or weapons once.

There seems to also be a lot less armour to find - the variety instead comes from the look changing when it's upgraded. Upgrading like this requires materials and these materials take the form of loot which, in Odyssey, would be the armour itself - the prize from treasure chests.

So this means that, in general, your prize for exploring a location is an ingot, the same as your prize was for exploring a different location. This, to me, diminishes the joy in the experience.

I just don't care what the loot is in Odyssey etc, I just explore open the chests/pick up the thing, then carry on. Only every so often do I open my inventory and go through the giant list of loot and maybe change. It's because there's TOO much loot.

Compare with something like Dungeon Master where every time you find some loot it is noteworthy and you carefully weight up if you should use it or not.

I can certainly see why they might want to pull back from Odyssey loot levels - personally I enjoyed collecting it. Grey and blue gets sold or dismantled, purple and yellow kept in my collection. But Valhalla seems far too extreme the other way.

And I'm not really even really that bothered by the armour. I can live without a vast collection given the setting and the silliness of having that much loot. The problem is there's nothing with variety to replace that with. Just a lot of ingots everywhere.

I haven't played it yet so I shall reserve judgement. I might be fine with ingots.

I honestly hope you are. Because the world is spectacularly lovely, and the Viking aspect spot-on. If the gameplay works for you (and the fantasy elements), then you'll be in for a treat.

having played more, I think is an enjoyable game, but Odyssey was far better under almost every aspect IMHO! Still, a good game
