Lars "Totally Texas" Doucet added,
A friend of mine did a huge Steam and SteamSpy scrape several years ago and we looked at data like this but by tag. Anyway the results were similar just some genres have changed in popularity/crowdedness since then. But there are some evergreens.
what are the evergreens and why are you not making one? :p
he's making a city builder, so I think that's an evergreen :) mostly they're very hard to make (strategy/sim/builders/RPGs)
shhh
Glad to read that! Only do far you can take match3 & solitaire as genres in the current steam landscape.
Yep, match-3s obviously don't do well on Steam but still sell on the casual portals. Casual solitaire also doesn't sell well, though my RPG solitaires have done much better than normal solitaire, but still there appears to be a ceiling.
I think I would have made more sales with Ancient Enemy if I'd straight up cloned Slay the Spire (like many other devs did) instead of designing my unique solitaire mechanic. Shame.
Yeah I probably would have done better with slayaway camp being a numbers-go-up diablo style arpg instead of working hard to make a really elegant puzzle game but oh well
It seems like a lesson I keep fail to learn: sometimes players really just want more of the same and the novelty is mostly just more interesting for the developer to work on.
Yes, I always try to add new features to my RPG, then get burned out, only to hear from players that the system was fine as it is
