I'm normally a fan of sidetalkers for reasons I'll explain in a minute but I don't like *that* implementation personally.
Western-written games tend to have smaller heads and more of the sprite body on screen than JP-written games do (a tendency for thigh-up sprites, like you have there). This means the character heads are often very far away from the text.
Which means that, especially if your eyesight isn't great and the resolution of the game is large, you may not be able to SEE the character expressions change while you're reading the words! Because it's too far away, outside of your focal range, and too subtle.
A big-old-head next to the text means the eye can easily follow expressions while reading the text, while still being able to pause and look up for a better overview of the scene if they want to.
However, your screenshot there suggests a head by the text even smaller and possibly HARDER to make out the expression on, in which case it's just cluttering the screen. If you only want a head there for a reminder of who's talking, color-coded nametags might be better.
yes I already have color-coded nametags! I think I'll remove it or make optional, since not sure about adding expressions to the smaller portraits
