I don't mind it as long as it is consistent. With one exception: if your game/book is in present tense but has flashbacks, put those in past tense.

yes, I agree that flashbacks should be in past tense :)

kinda throws me for a loop because I'm so used to reading fiction in past tense, but honestly, when a VN is well-written the words themselves disappear anyway so I don't really care either way

First person present tense is very popular in some genres (YA), even though to my non-native ear it sounds weird, so I guess third person could also be made to work. Goodreads has a list of popular books written in that perspective https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/third-person-present-tense …

If I were to write a book in that manner I would probably consider starting with a paragraph written in the more familiar past tense describing a past event, then moving forward to present events and present tense.

I think the present tense can be great if well made. It's not a VN, but I started playing Divinity 2, and the narrator is in 3rd person present tense. And honestly, he is one of the best things in the game.

I like it in close third, not so keen in third omniscient.

I like how they did the narration in doom patrol season one if you saw it

Seems weird to me, but I'm pretty narrow minded anyway with narrative styles... so better don't take my opinion into account.
