some newbie/aspiring devs asked me privately about tips, but I prefer to post them publicly. Also, everything is in my experience and I am NOT a big indie by any means :P

1) making "a good game" is not enough anymore 2) make a game well targeted to the platform/market. Example: sim/strategy for Steam are a very good combo. I don't know about other markets well enough 3) cross-platform development, mitigate risks by targeting different platforms

4) find a way to get extra funding. Crowdfunding or publishers (only those ready to invest money in advance are worth considering IMHO). Get some extra exposure through special events on Steam (very difficult though). Just the regular seasonal sales are too crowded already

5) last but not least, this is a marathon and not a sprint. I couldn't survive with games earnings until I released my 8-9th game, about 4-5 years after I started making indie games :D don't quit your daily job etc etc. You know it by now!
