I never really got into CRPGs before the fallout/baldur's gate era but I've recently tried some of the so-called golden age ones (early Ultimas, wizardry, might & magic, etc) and I'm happy to report they all suck.

Dungeon master supposedly a masterpiece but watch a playthrough of it on YouTube you wouldn't believe how clunky it is

you need to consider the times... :D For example I consider Vampire: The Masquerade one of my favorite all time games but when I tried to replay it a few years ago I was surprised how terrible the interface was and closed it after 5 min

I meant more design wise than tech! I find fallout (1997) aged quite gracefully & there was nothing really preventing making basically the same game with 16 colors 320x200 EGA graphics & PC speaker sound in 1987 that would have aged +/- just as well.

no I meant design wise too! haha Vampire interface design is TERRIBLE. A ton of clicks to do anything. I don't understand how I could play it. But back then it was an amazing experience. Dungeon Master was already much better IMHO

Being a lot simpler & smaller probably helped!

yes also might have been due to technical reasons in the end. I mean right now we have tools that makes drag & drop and a lot of things behind the scenes super easy, but back in 1990-1999 not sure how it worked
