to explain myself better: the games with more complex/difficult gameplay like SOTW or PS2 didn't do as well as games more focused on story with much simpler RPG gameplay like Loren and Cursed Lands

so my gut feeling is that the majority of people into VNs in general (there can be exceptions of course) prefer a simpler gameplay to a more complex/detailed one

So this is a generalization of course, but I think when people tend to play VN's they aren't really expecting much mechanically, so all of their praise / expectations are hinged on how good the narrative is rather than any gameplay element.

I wouldn't say RPG + VN is incompatible, it can work really well, just that people getting a VN aren't really getting it because it's an RPG if that makes sense. I think Match 3 works well though if Huniepop is anything to go by.

I love both, but they're not necessary when together. Not incompatible--but sometimes when your main focus is story/chars, having to grind through gameplay is a distraction more than a benefit. (Speaking in general terms, not about PS2 or any of your others specifically.)
