40% seems like a lot of tax for a self-employed person in the US. 20%-30% seems more realistic - deducting expenses, and counting income and payroll tax. (But not sales tax or VAT.)

the "official tax" here is 44% but with various extra local taxes it can go as high as 58%! well, I live in the most taxed country in the world. However, at least healthcare is free :)
