So, 'Lair of the Clockwork God' went "viral" ish yesterday. It certainly went round Twitter better than any other time in its history, and I thought it would be interesting to share some data on how this impacted sales. Ready?https://twitter.com/danthat/status/1240655374098841601 …

First, some numbers: CanYouPetTheDog tweeted about the game, with an ace video. I don't have stats for their tweet, but it currently has 833 RTs and 10k+ likes. I did a tweet about it, which currently has 1274 RTs and 8.7k likes. That equates to 550,000 impressions.

WOW! Over half a million impressions! All that has filtered down, and the video has been watched over 174,000 times, which as far as I'm concerned is a pretty big number.

So, how did this impact SALES? Well, are you ready? Zero new sales, as far as I can tell. I mean, it's possible someone bought it as a result, but like-for-like sales on the day before the tweet are actually down 29%. Wishlists, too, are slightly down on the day before.

What does all this mean? I have no idea. Being an indie developer is tough as fuck, I guess? I've been around long enough to remember when a single tweet pointing at your game from a "big account" was enough to bring in thousands and thousands of pounds in sales. Now? Zip.

To be clear: I'm not angry, or being all entitled and waving my hands in the air. I am simply *utterly amazed* at how things have changed. END OF THREAD. Please buy my game! Please review it if you've played it!https://store.steampowered.com/app/1060600/Lair_of_the_Clockwork_God/ …

Again, to be clear: I am just making a point about how things have changed. When I released The Swindle in 2015, a tweet doing those numbers from influential people would have *immediately* brought in £3000 in sales. Like, you could see the bump in Steam's sales data *instantly*.

thanks for sharing the data. And yes things have changed. A few days ago I tweeted this: https://twitter.com/WinterwolvesG/status/1239816000855576577 … social media followers aren't useless of course but have much less impact on sales than the store followers themselves
