lately i've felt increasingly drawn to the idea of taking very old games as concepts for making new ones. a lot of old games were good then and would still be good now with a lick of paint and some modern conveniences but not out of some nostalgia for older games, mind you
it could be, or maybe the trick is to use old games but adapt them to modern times and take into account the market. Sort of what @braceyourselfok is doing I think (Necrodancer, etc)

indeed that's exactly what we did :) We tried to find other old games that were suitable but some of them really were just kinda ... dull.

Hm that’s not really what I do. I research which genres are currently viable and I only make games in viable genres. It’s just a coincidence that an old genre (roguelikes) happened to be viable again.
