amazing how many people in percentage are having issues with downloading a zip and running the game from it. Most don't know how to unzip properly or have antivirus that delete the .exes and so on!

on windows part of this is caused by the built-in zip support in explorer which causes people to act like a zip is just a folder and double click the exe then wonder why its not working -_-

yes I know, indeed I had to explain to users that they were trying to run an exe "inside a zip". Fun times :D

wonder if you can do some kind of file check before any other code runs and if it fails pop up a messagebox telling the user the game is missing files and perhaps they might wanna try unzipping the archive

well tbh is a lot of work, when 99% of users will just use Steam :/ but using itchio client works fine, so that is a good solution already

Maybe package as msi instead of a zip?

no, then antivirus does their annoying filtering. Really a zip should be the safest, if users just unzip it on a new folder should work better than installers. But the current situation is that if you're not a computer "expert" you'll likely encounter problems

zip containing only an exe with an embedded proprietary data file which unpacks on first run? :D

no better: a tutorial video embedded in the zip explaining how to install the itchio client or even better linux and stop worrying about the codesign/antivirus :D
