I told them to use the itchio client, which will fix 99% of their problems, but is crazy to think how only 3-4 years ago selling downloads/installers was normal, and now thanks to the various OSes/antivirus/"security tools" it has become impossible

I mean it's crazy, between Catalina OS, the Windows smartscreen, "antivirus", codesign bla bla running a program has become a miracle!
And then they wonder how Steam has got the total monopoly lolShow this thread

on windows part of this is caused by the built-in zip support in explorer which causes people to act like a zip is just a folder and double click the exe then wonder why its not working -_-
-
the other big problem on windows tends to be that using the built in zip support flags the files as "having come from another computer" which puts security blocks on them that can cause issues with programs

Which is why there are installers, and that's how games used to be distributed (and still are, on GoG) In my case, it's people forgetting to install DirectX - so I pack it up with the installer.

do you codesign all the installers? otherwise Smartscreen will prevent them from working at all, if antivirus don't delete the exe before :P
