A straightforward thread about the un-sustainability of indie games. Don't forget this assumes a game was made solo, and DOZENS of games are released on Steam every day. Yes, every day. You need to somehow be a popular game, and stay popular for weeks and months to survive.

Did I miss this magical time when making indie games was an easy path to 100s of thousands of dollars? It's always been hard. The harsh reality is that most games don't need to be made, many aren't great, and not all have a market to sell to.

It was never *easy* but there were *easier* (e.g. 2008-2012) times. However I agree even as an indie dev myself that there isn't enough demand for indie games to justify that line of work being as economically safe as, say, being an accountant or a plumber.

But I think Mike's point isn't "it's unfair & need to change" as much as "pay attention people working on your first game - this is the reality we live in!".

Yeah, I get asked questions like "when is it safe to become an indie" and "how much should you have in the bank", etc. Things like Indie Game The Movie, the so called iPhone Gold Rush, and nobody stepping up to talk about how bad it is have created this false sense of security.
