I think that could work well, although I love a lot of those games so I may be a bit biased.

I think the key is in what we're showing via visuals in relation to text. In Disco Elysium for example, character actions are only described via text while the character models don't do anything. In VNs where the sprites are expressive and dynamic, it would cause some dissonance.

E.g. Narration says a character scratches his head, but the sprite doesn't. It works in these top-down RPGs where the character models don't move much and are usually represented by static portraits.
