I got into game dev by teaching myself to program and then practicing that for many years. Made lots of small games and bits of games before my first small commercial game. There are other ways but that’s what I did.

Isn't that the standard way? I & friends made lots of shitty little games and bits-of-games in BASIC in school.

my path was odd: turbo pascal 7 (ms-dos), visual basic, blitz basic, visual C++ and PTK (custom libraries) and finally Ren'Py/python (stuck with this for the last 10 years and I'm happy)
