I was about to buy some 3d software and models after watching some realtime great 3d videos but then I rememebered that getting one model/scene to look awesome is "easy", having a full game with consistent 3d art is "slightly" more difficult and out of any indie budget I think

Im bit picky as well. I remember Black Isle and their attempt on talking 3D faces in Fallout 2. Archaic now, but was cool back then.

it's really hard to make a 3d game with consistent style. I prefer hand drawn too, the main appeal of 3d to me is the possibility of play it like a movie, animations, camer angles etc
