That would not be surprising. Fruit and vegetables in the US are bred to survive long travel and storage without damage or spoilage. French people tend to buy from markets the day they intend to use them. More perishable but also more tasty and nutritious.
I had two French friends who often traveled/worked there, they didn't mention the prices but said that both fruit and veg tastes horrible compared to what they were used to in their country. Like if they were made of plastic or something. I haven't tried it personally though
