using the new Steam Deepdive made me understand why most VNs don't make any money anymore - they all look the same, it's really hard for someone who doesn't already know the devs to pick a title!

Yeah, unfortunately that's the problem of over-saturation. The brain eventually just categories everything as the same and it becomes harder and harder to differentiate between VNs. I'd like not to admit that this has happened to me more than I think, as much as I like my fluff.

the fun thing is that if you try to make VNs in a different art style results are usually even worse

Yeah, it reminds me of one of the problems that VN developers in Japan are facing... which is similar to the problems that are happening in the anime industry too... It likely doesn't help that there are "meme games" running around which makes it even harder to break through.

and let's not mention games with stolen art (I heard several games just rip manga art from around the net!) usually those "hentai puzzles" and similar...
