For example I think VNs with no manga art are a bad idea. I think sci-fi doesn't sell as much. I think voiceovers are just an extra thing.
Yet one of the most interesting (and I suppose successful) recent VN on Steam is Eliza. Sci-fi, fully voiced, non anime art

Of course that's just one game, and it might be that the great writing is the main appeal (haven't played it but from the reviews it seems is a well written story). Or maybe the fact that comes from a well known company has more weight than I thought.
