I just realized something that's not good for my kind of games:
1) localization has become very important
2) translation costs are high (if you want good results)
3) games with a lot of wordcount = very expensive
4) visual novels are a bad genre choice right now

Is the spread of sales pretty even across different languages for VNs in particular? I've been wondering about localization recently myself.

I have no clue honestly, but I know of other game genres that got a big boost being localized
