I don’t know how anyone does indie full time and survives.

I do, but: I keep my expenses low, have already a good following, I have short production cycle (10-12 months MAX for a game, often shorter) and I don't have kids or mortgage :P

We were lucky to be nearly done with Dizzy Hearts by the time this started.

You've also hit the zeitgeist jackpot as you released lewd games right after they were allowed (and became a raising trend) on Steam. It was very similar for us with Cinders and the introduction/boom of VNs on Steam.

Porn games don't actually sell better than all ages games. It's more that our community is strong and resilient because we put effort into the stories rather than pumping them out cheaply. I'm actually doing narrative games ineffectively, and porn games ineffectively.

Remember we also put tons of effort into our stuff and it isn't helping. That's the thing -- we used to have a strong community of direct fans, but big stores dissipated them. Porn games are still in that spot. Probably for a short while, though.

Right, I'm not saying you didn't put effort in. But yea gameplay elements will just automatically reach a bigger audience. Dizzy Hearts is unfortunately the exact opposite game you want to release in this environment.

That said, there might be time for devs to get out, or just switch to Gamemaker or something very low entry. A lot of us are lucky in that we won't be at zero when things bottom out, we can prepare for this shift now.

I have already started looking at Gamemaker to do some tower defense/survival game + story The only good thing is that for those more gameplay oriented games I won't need to write anymore stories of 250,000 words!!! :D

I like games like Advance Wars too, stuff with gameplay and VN style dialogue. That's a good way to keep the VN spirit alive.
