BAH you should listen to indies who have $50M in bank and say that's there's no indieapocalypse and that is easy to make games now as it was 5 years go!
I don’t know how anyone does indie full time and survives.
I do, but: I keep my expenses low, have already a good following, I have short production cycle (10-12 months MAX for a game, often shorter) and I don't have kids or mortgage :P
We were lucky to be nearly done with Dizzy Hearts by the time this started.
You've also hit the zeitgeist jackpot as you released lewd games right after they were allowed (and became a raising trend) on Steam. It was very similar for us with Cinders and the introduction/boom of VNs on Steam.
Sales have been so bad, we worry about the future in VNs at all. Hopefully Dizzy Hearts will parachute us into a more lucrative games medium.
Yeah, I think indie EVNs as a commercial genre are dying quickly (or are already dead).
if you can make the game under $5-6k AND take 3-4 months, then maybe you can make a profit. But even then I'm not sure, since I sell mostly because have great fans behind me. If I was starting now... no hope probably
I have absolutely no doubt that if we released Cinders today, it wouldn't be the surprise hit it was. It would flop completely, despite being a really nice game (which after several years I'm finally comfortable admitting :P).
Well not just Cinders, or visual novels, any game. Pick a game which made six figures on Steam back in 2012-2013 and release now, they'd be lucky to make low five figures in a year!
Jason Rohrer pointed out in his talk that there are still plenty of games that make good money on Steam. But the influencers have shifted from traditional medias to Twitch and youtubers, favoring a different kind of games. What do you people think about that?
yes that's true. So basically it means that "as indie you're free to do what you want" is a lie. You need to do what the market wants, otherwise deal with low sales/exposure
