Even if I was able to run a Steam sale every week it would still not earn me enough money to pay my bills. A thread... Last year, before the great Steam algo change of October, Shadowhand could make around $5000 gross from a weeklong Steam sale and $10K in the summer sale.

My other games would push up the total to over $6000. Now a weeklong sale generates about $1700 for Shadowhand and a few hundred more for my other games. About $2500 total. Also Shadowhand made about $3500 in the last winter sale (a lot less than the $10K in the summer sale)

I'm also using a higher discount now before anyone asks, because it's normal practice to regularly step up the discount. ANYWAY, remember you can only run a weeklong sale every 8 weeks. And in between sales revenue is very low.

Let's say I was able to run a sale every week. What would my income be? Well after Steam cut and publisher share I made about £600 last week. Multiplied up that's about £2600 a month.

That might be OK for some people but it's about half what I need to survive a month with a family of four in the UK living in the countryside. Don't forget that money gets taxed.

It's been 18 months since my last game release so clearly I need to release a new game (and one is coming out soon!). That will hopefully generate some good funds on launch.

BUT there has already been quite a lot of money invested in the game (by me and third parties) which needs to be paid back before I start to see a genuine boost to my monthly income. And meanwhile I have to start the process of making a new game, which costs money...

So anyway, there's a little slice of reality for interested parties. Of course if you manage to get in the top 1% of games and have a hit, things could be different, but what about the other 99%?

that's what I've been saying since years while everyone was snobbing me like "this fool and his indieapocalypse theory". And I think it's going to be even worse!
