all right I decided to not do demos anymore. Spoke with a few indies, which are "slightly" more successful than me (lol) and they all said that demos are bad. Besides I was wasting extra time to make sure demo worked instead on focusing on making the full game better

Curious about it too. Got a lot of people saying demos are bad for launch day sales, but I think they're still good for community building.

bad for launch day sales? this is new. What evidence have those "lot of people"? My data is that demos can convert players, but in the end nowadays since 99% of people buy on Steam, with the 2h refund time it's like if they get a demo anyway...

lots of indies feel they depress sales. many people who buy indie games don't play them very long and so would be satisfied after playing the demo, and never buy the game
-
yes this is a good point. I'm worried for my last RPG since just the demo is 5h long... probably I should just give up with it!

As a player I like demos from indies I'm unfamiliar with - if I'm on the fence about a game a good demo will persuade me to buy. But if I already know & like the developer I'll just go ahead and buy the game
