Lewie Procter added,
Having no choice over where to buy something is literally the exact opposite of competition.
But it boosts the competitiveness of that store which is the point. It's a way to break a monopoly.
The 30% discussion pre-existed Epic store for a LONG time amongst devs.
I'm broadly of the view that were the 30% cut unacceptable, devs wouldn't require a big bag of money to drop Steam support, and they'd also pull their games from PSN, Xbox Live, Nintendo eShop, iOS App Store and Google Play.
You should talk to more devs and find out what they really think. That's a simplification that doesn't take into account changes in store visibility and desperation to survive and viable alternatives etc.
there's that poll/survey done by @larsiusprime , before 2015-16 or something most devs agreed Steam was earning their 30%. For the last two years instead, most devs agree they're not. So it's not just "a few devs" :P
and if that's true, these developers will stop releasing games on Steam, and not just because another party like Epic gave them a bag of money. This would be competition in action.
also this isn't very different from Sony/Nintendo giving lot of cash to devs to have their platform exclusive games. At least in this case you don't need to buy a new console but just install another client! :P
