Thread about a topic that keeps coming up recently: I've had loads of conversations with developers who believe that the way to battle declining sales and rising saturation, is to throw more time and money at development. I honestly couldn't disagree more with this sentiment.

The popular train of thought I keep seeing, is that developers believe big budgets and huge scope will help them rise above the rest, and make players believe their game is worth checking out. I completely understand where this line of fire has come from, but it's just wrong.

Here's the thing they're missing: Players do not give a shit how long a game took to make, or how much money was ploughed into it. They don't care that you slaved over your game for 3 years, and spent $500k making it. It means nothing to them.

I get devs coming to me all the time saying they have a prototype, and they need $500k, and plan to release in 2022. And I'm like, how the fuck do you even know what video games will look like in 2022? How do you know anyone will give a shit about what you're making by then?

When devs say to me "I'm cutting the risk by spending more time and money on my game", I don't think they realize they are *doing the opposite.* You're putting all your eggs in one basket, and then praying that players give a shit about your basket.

Now look, I'm not saying don't spend the appropriate amount of time on your game. Do what you wanna do, make it how you want to make it. But please god, don't think adding an extra year of polish and content is going to all of a sudden make you sell 100000s more copies. It won't

My honest opinion: 99% of devs over-scope, and need to cut down on their plans. Take your plans, and work out how to cut them in half. Aiming for 2021? How can you make your game happen in 12 months instead? Just stop taking on so much risk, please. It's brutal out there rn.

I thought this was common knowledge by now? surprised some people still think the opposite to be honest!

No, it's not common knowledge, at all... that's survivorship bias in action right there!

well to be fair, until 4-5 years ago that was a good strategy. Make a big game instead of smaller ones. But things change at lightning speed nowadays...
