I didn't really make any decent money from games for 18 months. It was very close to being a failed venture, but through persistence/stubborness, luck and support from

It took me about a year and a half until I hit a success that was enough to be a supporting revenue source, but when I quit my job I was also still living with my parents so I had a pretty wide safety net to go "back" to a day job if going indie failed.

"still living with my parents" saved me too, years ago. Definitely a big plus if you're trying to go full-time! :P
