Seems like just a few years ago I had to obsess over fillrate and texture sizes and now it's like "Yeah, let's keep this tiny GUI item 1024x1024 because I may want to scale it or whatever."

Dunno, it's definitely way better these days, but texture sizes and fillrates were the only issues keeping Rumina from working smoothly on Intel iGPUs in high res, which brings major advantages in power saving and battery time.

My main laptop has integrated GPU and a low-voltage 1.2GHz processor, and honestly it runs anything I throw at it. Of course I still *do* put some care into optimising stuff, but for me it's a world of difference between now and those 5-7 years ago.

I remember stuff like having fog sprites at half the displayed size since they're gonna be blurry anyway, or looping backgrounds to keep them within 1024px. Nowadays I can easily keep most textures at 4k to allow for nice zooming or native res on retina screens. It's cool.

Yeah, for most cases iGPUs are already fast enough, but can still struggle with hidpi screens like mine. Still, getting it to run there made the temperatures of laptops with regular screens way lower. Power usage is harder to see, but gets more important now than 5-7 years ago ;)

Agreed. My laptop (it's the pink one) runs some crazy retina resolution and only has passive cooling. Energy usage/heat is one of the reasons I don't play many Ren'Py games for instance, despite them running fine all in all.

Weird. Have you tried it lately, in the past year or so. 6.99.14ish had some big improvements, I think. I'm curious if it helped in your case.

I don't think games I played were recent enough to run this version. But I'll try something newer later out of curiosity. :)

you should play Cursed Lands as "extreme test". Each enemy is 1024x1024 texture, plus various effects on screen. In the recent ren'py it runs rather well even on my mini ipad so I think should work on your laptop. You know I can give it to you for free :P
