Anyway I'm looking forward to the gaming press' think pieces late this year when shit really hits the fan in this industry for indies going "it's amazing nobody saw this coming" and people like me, @glassbottommeg, @GreyAlien, @unormal et all just making the biggest

I was on a panel back in 2013 where I talked about the oncoming indiepocolypse which everyone in the biz could see coming. The main thing I learned was that acting as a prophet of doom to a room of fresh faced and hopeful indies was not he way to make friends. :(

The problem is if you believe that devs with good games can fail then that has some serious implications if you're in the business or trying to get in the business, I think. Easier to just stick your head in the sand and pretend it can't happen to you.

yes exactly, everyone thinks that it won't happen to THEM. Until it does, and then it's too late :/ The thing is that it's not crap, ugly games that are struggling, are indies with definitely GOOD games in their respective genres. This is bad.

You definitely need a bit of hubris to even attempt a career like this. But expectations should always be managed. I always treat every game as a potential failure and am always thinking of alternate strategies if things don’t go the way I hope.

Although in general I don’t like to publicly point out our failures because a chunk of our games are created in partnership with other developers and it isn’t my place to say anything.

It's also literally not a great idea to point out failures (see
@WritNelson's thread yesterday), at least until they're far enough back that you've turned them into successes or had a success since.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

Like, if I'd come out about Hot Tin Roof tanking day 1, it'd be dead. Instead, it went on to break even, make a small profit, and be in the single biggest-grossing Humble Bundle there ever was (for possibly the best cause they've ever supported). So THAT'S cool.

I see articles calling their games failures two months after launch. That’s wayyyy too soon to give up. And sometimes their sales figures are on par with mine. Some folks just have insanely high expectations (or they spent way too much time and money, but that’s another debate).

shut up Jake, you're responsible of this exaggerated expectations attitude with your talk about surviving 10 years without any hit!!! ;D
