Honestly most ways I see to survive 2019 as an indie involves being at least somewhat established and having some niche fame/connections. Which is semi-good news for me, maybe, but terrible news for anyone trying to break into the commercial indie space as a newcomer.

Anyway I'm looking forward to the gaming press' think pieces late this year when shit really hits the fan in this industry for indies going "it's amazing nobody saw this coming" and people like me,

I was on a panel back in 2013 where I talked about the oncoming indiepocolypse which everyone in the biz could see coming. The main thing I learned was that acting as a prophet of doom to a room of fresh faced and hopeful indies was not he way to make friends. :(

The problem is if you believe that devs with good games can fail then that has some serious implications if you're in the business or trying to get in the business, I think. Easier to just stick your head in the sand and pretend it can't happen to you.

yes exactly, everyone thinks that it won't happen to THEM. Until it does, and then it's too late :/ The thing is that it's not crap, ugly games that are struggling, are indies with definitely GOOD games in their respective genres. This is bad.

You definitely need a bit of hubris to even attempt a career like this. But expectations should always be managed. I always treat every game as a potential failure and am always thinking of alternate strategies if things don’t go the way I hope.

same here. when I started, I always assumed my next game would earn next to zero, and I was starting a new one immediately (or like now, doing more than one game in parallel)
