I spent several years trying to organize and advocate on behalf of indie developers. The big lesson that taught me was: - We do NOT agree on loooots of things - We do agree on SOME things. - Everyone massively overestimates how much their personal opinions are shared by others

My surveying methods were always sub par and left a lot to be desired. But I think we'd all do ourselves a big favor by really trying to get *systematic* about listening to each other without trying to force an early consensus based on our own views.

I want what's best for everyone, but I've learned that what I *THINK* is best for everyone, isn't, always.

One of the most common responses to the sruveys I did was, "I don't like the results, the survey must be wrong" -- perhaps the survey was wrong/flawed! But none of those people ever offered to do their own surveys with improved methods, which I would have welcomed.

I get it's a lot of work and nobody asked me to do the surveys in the first place. But seriously, are you interested in actually knowing what your community actually wants? How will we ever negotiate effectively unless we KNOW?

Everyone talks about solidarity and pulling together, but how can we do that unless we first establish what we even agree upon? Props to everyone actually doing this outside of my view/bubble, I'm sure there's actually a whole lot of you.

Do you seek the voices of the silent and the quiet and the timid and the afraid? Or do you just let the two or three people with loud consistent voices do all the driving?

"Hey, but the stakes are high!" The stakes are always high. So do the work. Do it properly. Man I feel like a scold. I should underline this with the fact that I mostly suck at what I do, and if you try earnestly, you will surely surpass me.
