I think people have very wrong ideas of how much (little) money you can make with an indie game, especially today with the insane competition. I'll make a simple example ->

this is a best case scenario: a game sells for $100k on Steam (a miracle) net revenues from Steam are about 65k taxes, unless you live in a tax heaven will be at least 25-30k 35k goes is in your pocket, if you were good you managed to spend only $10k to make your game = $25k

but making $100k is really hard. Maybe you can in 3-4 years if your game is VERY GOOD. For example

You can't fool me! I know that all the experienced professional indie developers warning people that it's tough to make money is a just a scam so you can keep new people out of your sweet sweet piles of lucre.
