from my development point of view I'm not sure if it could be worth it, if for example people who already played it would ignore it, or if the game was bad, even if was greatly improved people could still be biased towards it
what do people think about re-releasing a game as "gold version" or "remastered". For example keeping existing characters/art but improving some aspects like gameplay / story?

It's so context-dependent. I personally feel like if you want to give it a new 'name', there should be a fairly noticeable change. It should be obviously different enough that people who've played it before might want to buy it again. Otherwise, it should just be an update.

Big visible changes: porting to a new engine, replacing artwork, changing art resolution, completely reworking minigames/combat, adding a new protagonist or 'evil route' which is a clearly different take on the original story...
