It's been confirmed that buying/playing a Steam game via Linux+Proton counts as a Linux sale (previously WINE games were suspected to be treated as Windows sales). How high will Steam's reported Linux marketshare (0.49% currently) be in six months?
if microsoft does one of those crazy moves to require codesign/sandboxing or some other mess, things could change completely for linux/SteamOS. Until then, not sure... :)

I don't think folks appreciate the effect of Windows 10 S-mode enough (i.e. new PCs are shipping in a "Windows Store Only" mode). They don't have to remove the ability to do something to have an effect, just make it more difficult to do.

Indeed. Likewise, Valve doesn't need SteamOS to gain marketshare to be a success, if the mere credible threat of it keeps Microsoft from clamping down Windows.
