well so my question was, why some devs moved away from VN, having had big hits in the past? could be that they're just tired of it and want something new though

(1/2) This is rough to say but Christine, who pioneered getting EVNs on Steam, now has to compete on that platform with VNs from teams with better artwork, writing and even better gimmicks (DDLC, I'm looking at you). LKiaB was not well received critically.

(2/2) The market's changing, the back-patting gaming press that lauded her earlier works has self-destructed, and "I was here first" doesn't mean much to the current generation that doesn't remember. I can't speak for Tom but if he burned out making that engine I'm not surprised.

(3/2) Also to be the first VN dev on Greenlight only to see curation be replaced by a flat fee is probably demoralizing.

I much prefer the flat fee to Greenlight. Both pretty much have the same effect of everything eventually getting in, but GL was infinitely more annoying. It basically made it mandatory for devs to dedicate a lot of their time and social media presence to begging for votes. Ugh.

Yeah out of all my complaints with Steam, replacing Greenlight isn’t one of them—in general, I’m wary of explicitly curatorial approaches, they inherently punish anyone in a niche. The current system seems much more accessible. DEFINITELY glad it’s not the excludionary 2012 model

a higher fee for example would have been a better idea. Like $1k which any half-decent game could raise on itchio or through crowd-funding, but that an asset flip game would probably have hard time to earn

Tbh, asset flips and the likes don't compete with normal games. They get buried fast and don't appear in any relevant list ("New Releases" were unusable since forever now).

yes that's exactly what I'm talking about. New releases before GL WAS usable. After? they could just remove it... :P I'm not the one saying it, I have read a lot of complaints in various places from users

But before GL your game as well as mine weren't on Steam at all. It's a trade off.

yes, but if there was an entry fee of $1k we could have both games there instantly and not fight for exposure against "asset flip simulator 3786182b"
