many devs I respect (@TomGrochowiak, @christinelove, @HanakoGames, etc ) are NOT making a VN as their next game. Wondering if the time of regular non-porn/fanservice VN is coming to an end (not viable anymore commercially) ?

Not really Its more than most of their titles didn't sell well otherwise it would be weird that more and more jp devs are releasing their titles on steam or have partnerships with western publishers like Mangagamer etc.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying there titles were bad but maybe to produce them did cost more than they earned it from the sales? It that case it would be better to produce something "easier" with a higher customer base

By Love's own admission LKiaB broke even in its first 3-4 weeks of sales, BEFORE adding it to another store.

well so my question was, why some devs moved away from VN, having had big hits in the past? could be that they're just tired of it and want something new though

(1/2) This is rough to say but Christine, who pioneered getting EVNs on Steam, now has to compete on that platform with VNs from teams with better artwork, writing and even better gimmicks (DDLC, I'm looking at you). LKiaB was not well received critically.

(2/2) The market's changing, the back-patting gaming press that lauded her earlier works has self-destructed, and "I was here first" doesn't mean much to the current generation that doesn't remember. I can't speak for Tom but if he burned out making that engine I'm not surprised.

(3/2) Also to be the first VN dev on Greenlight only to see curation be replaced by a flat fee is probably demoralizing.

I much prefer the flat fee to Greenlight. Both pretty much have the same effect of everything eventually getting in, but GL was infinitely more annoying. It basically made it mandatory for devs to dedicate a lot of their time and social media presence to begging for votes. Ugh.

Yeah out of all my complaints with Steam, replacing Greenlight isn’t one of them—in general, I’m wary of explicitly curatorial approaches, they inherently punish anyone in a niche. The current system seems much more accessible. DEFINITELY glad it’s not the excludionary 2012 model

yes full curation is bad but, there should be a "minimum quality" filter to avoid getting the store filled by crap which is damaging also Steam and the users (many of them complaining is not possible to find new good game in middle of so many terrible "games")
