many devs I respect (@TomGrochowiak, @christinelove, @HanakoGames, etc ) are NOT making a VN as their next game. Wondering if the time of regular non-porn/fanservice VN is coming to an end (not viable anymore commercially) ?

It's still mostly a VN! It just has dungeons *too* :)

well you can't say it's "mostly a VN" and then in the same sentence "it has dungeons too"! lol otherwise I can say that my RPGs are just VN, but with fights, quests, inventory, map, skilltrees, level up, 200 unique items and 100 different enemies :P

I think percentages make a difference personally. :P Like, Black Closet is obviously NOT a VN. It's mostly mystery-solving. There's tons and tons of dialog, but it's not what you spend the bulk of your time doing. The game is won or lost based on your minion-management.

So, Magical Diary is a stat-raising dating sim that happens to have a handful of set puzzles in it. It's not a full RPG/VN hybrid IMO because the exam sections don't take up a big amount of the game, and you can fail most of them and still complete the game.

yes in my original post I was referring to "plain VN", not even stat-raising. Sorry if was unclear :P
