I'm not sure if it has really been viable for years. Some are, but for the most part, it seems like most struggle to come close to breaking even.

I wish I could be a philanthropist and self fund dozens of VNs. I think there is still a market, but it needs proper marketing. The Letter and VA-11 Hall-A did very well AFAIK. It's the indie problem.

It's still mostly a VN! It just has dungeons *too* :)

So its like a VN - Dungeon Crawler/RPG hybrid which not only can reach more customers but introduce some to the VN genre?

Not really Its more than most of their titles didn't sell well otherwise it would be weird that more and more jp devs are releasing their titles on steam or have partnerships with western publishers like Mangagamer etc.

Starry-eyed indies with cool VN ideas will always be there and some of them will break through. After all, we too were the few lucky ones. Personally, I'm genre-tired and don't much care for the current Steam market, but that's a perspective of someone who's already been there.

If someone has a great VN in the works that will top all our efforts, a few tired old farts definitely shouldn't stop them.
