every day there's a new indie postmortem about a failure. They talk about marketing, not having a publisher, no exposure...
sorry to be blunt but have maybe you considered that YOUR game is the PROBLEM? that the game you made is bad?

Huh, harsh. TBF, I've seen quite a lot decent indies failing for these reasons and poor games succeeding because they got marketing etc. right. The one thing is, lack of exposure, publisher etc. is not something the author of a game can complain about or justify themselves with..

...if the dev don't have a proper target audience, ideas how to market their game and plan on how to do it, no one will do it for them. I think even making a below-average game is not a reason for it to fail utterly. :>

I think indies nowadays have totally unrealistic expectations on how much their game will sell - not saying all games are bad, but they think maybe will sell 100, and then will sell 20. A failure? no, but completely under their (crazy) expectations
