took me over 6 years since I started being indie do have a *minimum salary* revenue from games (my parents supported me until then). Yet new indies think to make a hit with an average game on first try. It can happen, but winning the lottery can happen too, in theory

Huh, harsh. TBF, I've seen quite a lot decent indies failing for these reasons and poor games succeeding because they got marketing etc. right. The one thing is, lack of exposure, publisher etc. is not something the author of a game can complain about or justify themselves with..

...if the dev don't have a proper target audience, ideas how to market their game and plan on how to do it, no one will do it for them. I think even making a below-average game is not a reason for it to fail utterly. :>

I think one should try to do exposed yourself at times. Indie games have to compete with big names, but work with your target audience. You have a genre target work with them. I've seen games fail because they didn't go to their audience or try to promote. Word of mouth works.
