It depends on what you want to accomplish... There's not a valid answer there. I've been studying RPG combat systems for over a decade, so if you need any input on that feel free to DM me.

well I can't probably code anything in real-time with Ren'Py (for lack of my own skills I mean) so I would only do turn based (as I'm doing already) or ATB. Was just wondering which game(s) you think has best combat systems ?

Mario RPG is probably my favorite. Turn based but you respond in real time during attacks to get bonus damage or defense. FF13 is probably my #2. Auto battles in real time but changing skill sets to fit the situation.

For me the real crux is how much battles keep you engaged while they are happening. Getting the right balance between winning by just mashing a button until it's over or if you need to make actual decisions.

That's why I love it when a game restores your health and mana after a battle. It lets the fights almost kill you every time and you get to use all your cool abilities without needing to save them for a boss who ends up immune to them anyway.

Imo, Real-time systems work only if you are controlling just one character.
